The students were paired up with either a school custodian, a cafeteria staff member, an office staff member, or a school crossing guard. They wrote a thank you letter for their tireless help to our community and put together goodie boxes to show their appreciation. We received help from our School Chef and made sweet and salty snack bars for the goodie bags. We presented the goodie boxes and gave each of our community heroes a standing ovation; like the character from our favorite novel, Wonder by RJ Palacios said :"everyone deserves a standing ovation at least once in their life." We also presented a special apron which the students decorated with their hand prints to show our appreciation to our school chef.

To go along with our unit on biographies and people who changed the world, we challenged our 2nd graders to do the same within our school community. We had a big school wide focus on nature and National Parks. We are fortunate enough to have an outdoor classroom on our campus. We took our classes out to it to see what they thought we could do to make it a better and well used by classes. Seating options were decided as somethings that was needed in order for classes to take advantage of this space. Students sold concessions during a basketball tournament at our school. The proceeds went towards building seating options in our outdoor classroom. We were lucky to have DOW Agrosciences help us plant plants and make nature trails, but the seating options were added because of this grant.
